Medical nutrition therapy of patients with atherosclerotic vascular diseases and hypertension by means of perilla oil and black grape extrakt as dietary food for special medical purposes
In several studies by different authors, positive effects of omega 3 fatty acids and grape components are postulated
for prevention of atherosclerosis and its complications. Recently, a new preparation of omega 3 fatty acids has been developed, consisting of vegetable omega 3 instead of animal omega 3. This omega 3 is a component of perilla oil and consists of alpha linolen acid (ALA) as primary ingredient. Additional positive effects are postulated for resveratrol and other flavanoids (polyphenols) which are
important ingredients of grapes. In black grapes, these phenols are in higher
concentration than in white grapes.
The effect of a dietary food for special medical purposes (capsules of perilla oil and black grape extract) on lipid and glucose levels, blood pressure, other clinical signs and symptoms and quality of life was
ivestigated over a 12-week period in 100 patients with atherosclerotic vascular diseases and hypertension.
After taking the recommended daily ration (1,6 g alpha linolenic acid and 0,6 g black grape extract) for 12 weeks, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were considerably reduced and HDL
cholesterol levels increased compared to baseline. Systolic blood pressure decreased from a mean of 151 to 138 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure from 93 to 83 mmHg. Improvements in all monitored signs and symptoms
specific to the disease and in quality of life were also clinically relevant and pronounced.
Taking capsules of perilla oil and black grape extract as a
dietary food for special medical purposes within a dietary/nutritional regime may be a safe and feasible option as a dietary intervention in atherosclerotic
vascular diseases which contributes an important benefit for the secondary prevention
in rehabilitation patients with coronay heart disease, myocardial
infarction, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, cerebro vascular diseases and
other manifestations of atheroscerosis.
